In each case, it depends on the circumstances in the company, which expenditures were made. Is free cash flow higher than EBITDA?įree cash flow can be higher or lower than EBITDA. This is the case, for example, if customers pay their invoices very late (a high value for days sales outstanding), or if a lot of capital is tied up in inventory. If this value is very low, it can be an indication that the working capital is not working efficiently enough in the company. The higher this value, the more efficiently the company converts its EBITDA into cash. This ratio then indicates how efficiently a company converts its EBITDA into cash: The FCF can be put into relation with the EBITDA. In the same way, the FCF can be used to calculate the EBITDA value by simply rearranging the formula above:ĮBITDA = FCF + Interest + Taxes + Changes in working capital + capital expenditures - net borrowing Free Cash Flow to EBITDA ratio Net borrowing is also referred to as net debt and can be found on the balance sheet under "Cash from investing". Once you have the value for EBITDA, you calculate all non-cash elements from it to get the FCF:įCF = EBITDA - Interest - Taxes - Changes in working capital - capital expenditures + net borrowingĪll values can be found on the balance sheet. You can convert the free cash flow into EBITDA and vice versa. It is better to calculate cash flow separately and not equate it with EBITDA if you want to get the most accurate picture of a company. If the cash flow is only measured on the basis of the EBITDA value, there can therefore be major differences to the actual free cash flow. It follows from the definitions in the above section that EBITDA includes the cash flows of a company, but it also includes other non-cash elements. In contrast to EBITDA, only the freely available cash elements that a company still has available after deducting all expenses (taxes, interest, etc.) are shown. In free cash flow, on the other hand, all depreciation and changes in working capital and capital expenditures are added to the revenues and interest and tax payments are deducted. Furthermore, EBITDA does not include capital expenditures. Rather, they represent different ways of showing a company's earnings, which gives investors and company managers different perspectives.ĮBITDA indicates revenue before taxes, interest payments and depreciation are deducted. ![]() Is EBITDA free cash flow?ĮBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) and free cash flow (FCF) are very similar, but not the same. ![]() We would like to explain why EBITDA and free cash flow are not the same and why they can differ greatly from each other. The question "What is the difference between EBITDA and free cash flow?" comes up frequently, because both figures show the earning power of a company.

The two endeavours were inherently connected. He was determined to be free not just of society’s demands upon him but even of his body’s demands on his soul. Diogenes more than exemplifies this principle. Cynic comes from the Ancient Greek meaning dog and this has been attributed to the fact that its members lived like dogs. Our modern word cynic derives from this ancient school of which Diogenes is the most famous philosopher. In winter, you could find him hugging icy statues and walking barefoot in the snow, while in summer you could find him rolling in hot sands.Īccording to many sources, this is where the term Cynicism comes from. He put his body through rigorous training to put up with the elements. This simplicity of living demanded a strong dose of self-control from Diogenes. Even this proved too luxurious one day, when he saw a boy drinking water from his hands he threw away the cup saying the boy had outdone him in simplicity. His possessions amounted to a cloak, a walking stick, a cup and a wallet to store food in. He shunned all possessions, status and wealth and strived to live a life of ascetic simplicity. When he first came to Athens, he took up residence in an upturned wine cask in the agora - the marketplace of Athens. Diogenes ruthlessly applied this simple rubric to every aspect of his life. ![]() Simplicity manifests itself in two intertwined ways in the philosophy of Diogenes - the philosophical and the physical.įor this godfather of Cynical philosophy, living the good life is easy - it’s just a matter of stripping away all the bullshit, of cutting away everything that is unnecessary. It’s a theme that runs through all the quotes and anecdotes of the ancient philosopher. But to my eyes, there is one word that unlocks the living philosophy of Diogenes more thoroughly than any other: simplicity. There are a lot of different keys for unlocking the philosophy of Diogenes - virtue and freedom amongst them. Diogenes is living out his highest ideal, but the word happiness just doesn’t fit with what he was aspiring to. In the case of Diogenes - a man who lived in an urn hugging icy statues in the middle of winter - this glove really doesn’t fit. And obviously, when we use this word, it comes with associations of positive affect and happy feelings of joy and peace.īut the connection between the highest goal of life and happiness is not a necessary one. Most people who are stung by a flying insect will experience moderate to sharp pain that typically subsides after a couple hours, Zipkin says.Washing the area that was stung diminishes the chances of subsequent bacterial infections, and the cold compress reduces swelling, Zipkin says. Zipkin, a New York City-based associate medical director of Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care. Wash the affected area and apply an ice pack. Once you’ve removed the stinger, wash the affected area with soap and water and apply a cold compress, says Dr.“Since it’s sometimes difficult to identify which insect is responsible for the sting, and you might not be able identify whether there’s a venom sac, play it safe and avoid using tweezers,” she says. This isn’t the case with wasps and hornets, which don’t leave behind a venom sac. “If you use a tweezer to remove the stinger, you risk releasing more venom from the sac,” Dempsey says. You shouldn’t try to remove it with tweezers, because the stingers of some flying insects – like honeybees – contain a venom sac. ![]() Multiple documentary film crews at Base Camp filmed the avalanche and its aftermath with high-definition cameras. ![]() Plus, another pragmatic reason made the Everest storyline important: actual footage of the quake. There was the need to “get bums in seats,” as Lambert says, which also loomed large. “We were always wrestling with how to balance Everest with what happened elsewhere.”īut Lambert and others also knew that the general public’s fascination with Everest would likely suck in viewers who might otherwise skip a film about the Nepalese fight for survival. “As filmmakers, we didn’t want to fall into the same trap,” Lambert says. ![]() The team spoke to a Nepalese researcher who showed them how the 22 deaths at Base Camp generated nearly 50 percent of all international headlines about the earthquake itself, and how this disparity in storytelling obfuscated the true size and scope of the disaster. There’s also some dramatic reenactment to recreate moments that were lost in time. These stories are told through interviews with the people who survived, and with amazing footage captured at each location. The third (and most tear-jerking) story takes place in a hotel in Kathmandu, operated by a reformed (and self-described) Nepalese gangster and his wife and children. Another story is set in the remote Langtang Valley, an off-the-beaten-path destination for trekkers, and it centers on three Israeli hikers and the villagers they meet along the way. The title card tips you off that one of these stories focuses on the climbers and guides who are preparing to ascend Mount Everest when the earthquake hits on the morning of April 25, 2015. The directors and producers tackle this lofty goal by weaving together three separate survival stories, set in three different locations, that all contain eerily similar elements of terror, sadness, and controversy. (Photo: Courtesy Netflix)Ĭomplete coverage of a disaster of this size and scope in one film is, of course, impossible. “You could make an entire film about the discussions we had about the title alone.” Some of the film’s best scenes play out in Kathmandu. “Literally, from day one of the production, the question we asked was how can we ensure that this huge disaster taking place in the Indian subcontinent is not framed as a load of white people bleating about their holiday going wrong,” Lambert says. I recently spoke to British filmmaker Olly Lambert, Aftershock’s director, and he said that he and the film’s producers constantly weighed how much attention to give the Everest mountaineers, and how much to give to other storylines. But Aftershock also takes viewers into crumbling buildings in downtown Kathmandu, and high into devastated villages on the other side of the country, to tell a broader story of the disaster. It tackles the question of what happens when millions of people are instantaneously placed in survival situations-do they look out for one another or themselves? Mount Everest, and the avalanche that devastated Base Camp, is of course a chapter in this story. ![]() While Aftershock is marketed as the latest Everest documentary, the film attempts to tell a story that is much larger than the world’s highest peak.Īftershock documents the horror and devastation caused by the April 2015 earthquake in Nepal that left nearly 9,000 people dead and an estimated 2.5 million homeless. As the story unfolded, I saw that there was a balancing act of a different nature at play in the film. The snippet showed a mountaineer standing precariously on a rickety ladder in the Khumbu Icefall, and as a consumer of all things Everest, I immediately clicked through and binged the film’s three episodes. Two weeks ago, I fired up Netflix, and a preview for the new docuseries Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake flashed across the screen. |
